In the News Revenue Enhancement is a big issue for Sherborn these days and the Sherborn Recycling Committee is doing as much as it can to try to bring revenue into the Town coffers. Throughout the fall of 2004 the Committee was working to renegotiate its contract with the company that takes Sherborn's paper and commingled recyclables. Finally, in December of 2004, we had an agreement we wanted the Board of Selectmen to sign. It provided for Sherborn to be paid for its paper recyclable material, no cost to Sherborn for the hauling of either paper or commingled recyclables, and the installation of a compactor at the Recycling Center for commingled containers. None of these assets were in the previous contract and they represent significant cost savings as well as revenue to the Town. Also, the Committee found a new vendor who would pay the Town for the scrap metal that is collected at the Recycling Center. Although it hasn't amounted to a lot of money, it is better than nothing! Our newest collection program is for cell phones, which also brings in some revenue for the Town. Because the technology for cell phones is developing so quickly, people are replacing them every two years. However, they should not throw them in the trash because of the toxic metals they contain. Sherborn's Recycling Committee has partnered with Charitable Recycling www.charitablerecycling.com which donates usable phones to abused adults and children and to medical patients awaiting transplants as well as to third world countries. Phones that are not usable will be recycled and disposed of in a responsible manner. Additionally every time we ship 50 phones to them, they send the Town of Sherborn $1/phone. More revenue for Sherborn! Our clothing donation boxes at the Recycling Center are operated on a concept similar to the cell phone program. We work with Community Crusade for Children www.communitycrusadeforchilren.org which donates some of its clothing to shelters and sells some to third world countries. Some of the money it receives is disbursed to children's programs in the communities the clothing is collected from and we have designated CSA at Pine Hill School as the recipient in Sherborn. All these efforts may sound like drops in the bucket compared to the size of Sherborn's overall budget, but if every resident did as much recycling as was truly possible, those drops could make a big difference! We urge you to do your part.
