SHERBORN RECYCLING COMMITTEE

The 211th meeting of the Recycling Committee was held at the Town Hall on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007 at 7:30 p.m.

Present: Carol Rubenstein (chair), Andrea Brennan, Ardys Flavelle, Ron Buckler, Jane Pusch                            and Karl Ludwig.

Not Present:  Susan Higley, Jack Mulhall, Susan Peirce, and Peggy Weber.

I.        Minutes of the September Meeting were approved.

            Thank you’s:

·        Andrea, Ardys and Amy Moore for their work at the Swap Shop

·        Andrea, Ardys and Karl for working with Carol on the press release about party and event recycling

·        Jane Pusch for her continued work on the Natick Mall Recycling Initiative

·        Karl for writing the September minutes

·        Andrea for her work on the welcome bins

II .Announcements, Old and New Business

  1. Carol noted that the Committee’s press release had appeared in the previous week’s DS Press.  She also sent a copy of the letter to the Buntaine’s because they advertised a Halloween party.
  2. The Committee discussed the status of magnets to advertise recycling.  The specifications have been sent to Impressions of MetroWest, but there has not yet been a response.
  3. Carol pointed out that GotBooks does not have a mechanism for automatically reporting when they empty our container.  Someone from the Recycling Center needs to notify her when it occurs and Carol can then request a tonnage report.  She has switched our payment plan to $0.05 per pound as the Committee had decided.
  4. Jane discussed the current status of recycling planning at the Natick Collection.  She is part of a committee from local towns that met with the Natick Collection management to move forward on the issue.  The local management team is contacting corporate headquarters to get more information about a Staten Island mall also owned by the corporation that won an EPA award.  They will meet again on Nov. 1.
  5. Carol has arranged to have our rechargeable batteries accepted by the same company that was taking them previously.  There is no charge, but we must collect and bag the batteries, and send them to the company.
  6. The Committee discussed the current status of recycling for refrigerators, a/c’s and dehumidifiers.  To cart away our items, American Waste Brokers wants us first to collect 20 appliances.  They would them come and retrieve them all.  We need to check on who owns the container used for this purpose.
  7. Carol discussed the status of the new shed project for the Transfer Station.  Dennis has arranged for an account at Home Depot for Tri-County to charge materials.  Tri-County still needs the revised plans for the 20’ x 8’ structure.
  8. Carol noted that Dianne is actively working on the Recycling website.
  9. Ardys discussed her recent work at Pine Hill School.  She is trying to get the school committee to pay the small extra expense necessary for purchasing recycled paper.
  10. Tonnage report:

      In September –

                  Refuse: 13 trips to Millbury

Paper: 4 trips (this seems low, Ron will double check the figure)

                  Commingled: 4 trips

Overall recycling rate is much lower than last month due to the low number of                                  paper trips.
