SHERBORN RECYCLING COMMITTEE

Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007

The 212th meeting of the Recycling Committee was held at the Town Hall on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007 at 7:30 p.m.

Present: Carol Rubenstein (chair), Andrea Brennan, Ardys Flavelle, Ron Buckler, Jane Pusch                            and Karl Ludwig.

Not Present:  Susan Higley, Jack Mulhall, Susan Peirce, and Peggy Weber.

I.        Minutes of the October Meeting were approved.

            Thank you’s:

·        Andrea for her work closing the Swap Shop

·        Ardys for her wonderful program at Pine Hill for America Recycles Day

·        Jane Pusch for her work on the Natick Collection Recycling Initiative

·        Sue Peirce, Wendy A. and Mary Barbara Alexander for helping at the Recycling Center distributing bins.

·        Jane Pusch for accompanying Carol to the Vendors’ Fair in Worcester

·        Karl for writing the October minutes

·        Andrea for her work on the welcome bins

II .Announcements, Old and New Business

  1. Carol noted that our press release about recycling at parties had appeared twice more in the DS Press.
  2. The Committee discussed refrigerator magnets that it had ordered to promote recycling.  The cost came in slightly above the $500 initially allocated for the purchase.

VOTE: The Committee voted to spend an extra $50 on the purchase of magnets           promoting recycling.

  1. There has apparently been some discrepancy in the amount charged by Recycling Center staff for recycling bins.  The Committee decided that a new sign was needed to reflect the current $8 price per bin.  Andrea volunteered to make a sign.
  2. The Committee discussed the use of grocery bags for holding recyclables being picked up by Ruane.  Commingled recyclables can be left loose in a recycling bin, but paper must still be put into paper bags because of the way in which the material is held on the Ruanes’ trucks.  Carol will check the wording on the current recycling poster to see if it’s current.
  3. Ron and the Committee members discussed the possibility of using biodiesel fuel in his truck.
  4. The Committee discussed Ardys’s recent idea of appointing neighborhood captains to organize fall and spring cleanup.  The Committee considered the possibility of asking CM&D to pick up trash bags left by volunteers on roadsides.
  5. The choices for scrap metal vendor were discussed by the Committee.  Our current scrap metal vendor is Dave Sullivan of American Waste; he has been paying $75 per ton and has been very reliable.  However Framingham Salvage is offering us $140 per ton based upon current prices.  Future prices would fluctuate with the market.
  6. Ardys discussed the current state of recycling at Pine Hill.  The Committee considered the possibility of changing vendors.  Ardys will talk to Chris Peck about the situation.
  7. Carol updated the Committee on the shed construction project at the Transfer Station.  An account has now been created at Home Depot on which the materials will be charged.  Hopefully the construction will begin soon.
  8. Carol said that she will meet with Dianne Veitch after Thanksgiving to foster progress on the recycling website.
  9. The Committee had preliminary discussions about the budget for FY09.  Further research needs to be done and will be reported on at the next meeting.
  10. Tonnage report: the figures below reflect corrected numbers for September.

      In October –

Refuse: 14 trips to Millbury – 1 more than last month and tonnage is way up.

Paper: 8 trips – 3 more than last month and tonnage is way up.

Commingled: 5 trips – the same as last month and tonnage is down slightly.

Overall recycling rate is quite good this month.
