May 9, 2007

The 206th meeting of the Recycling Committee was held at the Town Hall on Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at 7:30 p.m.

Present: Carol Rubenstein (chair), Andrea Brennan, Ron Buckler and Karl Ludwig.

Not Present:  Ardys Flavelle, Susan Higley, Jack Mulhall, Susan Peirce, and Peggy Weber.

I.       Minutes of the March Meeting were approved.

            Thank you’s:

·        Karl for doing the March minutes

·        Andrea, Peggy Weber and her family, Karl, Wendy Mechaber and Peter Grey for helping with the Recycling Center cleanup

·        Ardys for the work her Pine Hill Committee did on the auction as well as other PH issues

II .Announcements, Old and New Business

  1. Carol announced that NE Painting had finished painting the extra container for Swap Shop overflow materials.  Clean and painting the container cost $560.  Dave Goudreault of NE Painting pointed out that there was quite a bit of condensation inside the container, so we will need to make sure that materials inside stay dry.
  2. The Committee discussed the current state of the plans for a shelter to be built at the Transfer Station.  Walter has revised the specifications to make it longer and wider so as to avoid having any part set on top of landfill.  Ron has not yet seen the new drawings.  It is not clear whether Tri-County will have time to build the shelter before the end of the school year.  Sherborn CM&D will pour the concrete slab and dig the trench for the electrical and phone lines.
  3. The possibility of having Tri-County also construct the proposed Swap Shop overhangs was discussed by the Committee.  It seems unlikely that this could happen before the fall.  Carol is working to get the necessary Conservation Committee approval.
  4. Ron noted that, as of April 4, the Transfer Station had received 65 mattresses, 44 box springs, 25 couches and 14 overstuffed chairs since September.
  5. Ron announced that they had been able to get a free sign for the Transfer Station noting policy on disposal of construction materials there.
  6. The Committee discussed collection of recycled paper at Pine Hill.  Carol has called Richard Mathieu, the Business Manager for the regional schools and asked him to send Ruane and Father an invitation to bid on recycling material there.
  7. Carol reported on the progress that Ardys has made promoting recycling at Pine Hill and reducing waste.  Plastic cutlery used in the cafeteria no longer needs to be wrapped in extra plastic.  Mary Lucey has agreed to be the point teacher for environmental programs there.  For the recent Pine Hill auction, Ardys spearheaded an initiative to use decorations and other products made from recycled materials.  In addition, she has obtained a video for the school’s Earth Day program.
  8. Carol noted that she has mailed approximately 35 letters to local organizations about recycling at large public events.
  9. The Committee discussed maintenance of the Town’s recycling website.  Dianne Veitch is willing do the necessary work for $15/hour.
  10. VOTE: The Committee voted to spend up to $225 for maintenance of the Town’s recycling website.
  11. Committee member discussed writing an article on where our recyclables go.  The article could be distributed through Welcome Bins and local newspapers.  Karl agreed to help write it.
  12. Tonnage report:
