The 208th meeting of the Recycling Committee was held at the Town Hall on Wednesday, July 18, 2007 at 7:30 p.m.

Present: Carol Rubenstein (chair), Andrea Brennan, Ron Buckler and Karl Ludwig.

Not Present:  Ardys Flavelle, Susan Higley, Jack Mulhall, Susan Peirce, and Peggy Weber.

I.       Minutes of the May Meeting were approved.

II.     Minutes of the June Meeting were approved.

            Thank you’s:

·        Andrea, Ardys and Amy Moore for their work at the Swap Shop

·        Karl for writing the June minutes

·        Andrea for her work on the welcome bins

II .Announcements, Old and New Business

  1. VOTE: The Committee re-voted to spend $225 of last year’s budget to hire Diane Veitch to begin working on the Recycling Website.
  2. Carol noted that Selectman Peck has suggested that for Fall Cleanup Day the Town distribute free green recycling bins.  The current cost to the Town is $6.45/bin plus shipping.  She is giving the information to the Board of Selectmen for them to decide whether to have CM&D purchase the bins from its budget for the Fall Cleanup.
  3. Carol announced that the missing green and white barrel had been found still in its shipping box in the garage.
  4. VOTE: As discussed in previous meetings, the Committee voted to spend $60 of last year’s budget to purchase recycling stickers.
  5. The Committee discussed the need to prioritize Transfer Center upgrades in the future so that the limited funds available for such projects could be used expeditiously and efficiently.  Important possible projects include installing a new fence around the front of the Center and dressing up the area, and replacing the recycling trailers with sheds.
  6. Ron and Carol discussed their phone calls to the Interstate Batteries inquiring about the recycling of NiCd batteries.  While Interstate did not recycle NiCd batteries at the time, they thought that they might begin such a program quite soon.
  7. Ron discussed the difficulties that he has had with the telephone line going to the small office on top of the hill.  The new office should have the telephone line going underground.
  8. Tonnage report:

      In June –

Refuse: 15 trips to Millbury, 2 more than May and tonnage up.

Paper: 9 trips, same as last month and tonnage is slightly down.

Commingled: 5 trips, 2 more than last month and tonnage is up slightly.

The recycling rate for the fiscal year was 31.5% -- a large increase from 29.9% the         previous year!
