SHERBORN RECYCLING COMMITTEE

Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2007

The 213th meeting of the Recycling Committee was held at the Town Hall on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2007 at 7:30 p.m.

Present: Carol Rubenstein (chair), Andrea Brennan, Ron Buckler, Jane Pusch                            and Karl Ludwig.

Not Present:  Ardys Flavelle, Susan Higley, Jack Mulhall, Susan Peirce, and Peggy Weber.

I.        Minutes of the November Meeting were approved.

  Thank you’s:

·        Andrea for making a sign for the price of recycling bins

·        Wendy Mechaber for helping at the Recycling Center distributing bins

·        Jane (and Katie!) Pusch for their work on the Natick Collection Recycling Initiative.  They are now surveying stores about their use of the cardboard compactors.

·        Karl for writing the November minutes

·        Andrea for her work on the welcome bins

II .Announcements, Old and New Business

  1. The Committee continued their discussions about how best to promote town cleanup.  One possibility would be for CM&D to leave trash bags in mailboxes on the main streets where there is a larger litter problem.  Alternately, the Town could fund bags to be left in all mailboxes in town.  Carol will discuss this issue with the Board of Selectmen.
  2. Carol and Ron discussed their meeting with Matthew Applebaum of Framingham Salvage, who is offering us $140/ton for our scrap metal.  We will try using him as our scrap metal vendor.
  3. Carol noted that Framingham Salvage will also take our car batteries and give us a manifest for them, simplifying our recordkeeping.  Ron agreed to phone Interstate Battery, our current vendor, and tell them to stop picking up car batteries from our Transfer Station.
  4. The Committee discussed the changing situation for disposing of refrigerators, A/C’s and dehumidifiers.  Carol has talked with Peter of CRTR and he will now take the appliance bodies away free of charge, which appears to be better than paying $7 for Freon removal and placing the bodies in scrap metal.  Since it will no longer cost the Town money to dispose of these items, Carol will send a memo to the Board of Selectmen asking them to remove the fees for their disposal.
  5. Peter of CRTR will also stop charging us to pick up monitors (though he will still charge for televisions).  Again, Carol will send a memo to the Board of Selectman asking them to remove the fees for their disposal.  Ron will use tape to cover the fees listed on the signs at the Transfer Station.
  6. Carol summarized her work with Dianne Veitch on the Recycling website.  Good progress is being made.
  7. Karl discussed the need for additional recycling bins at the Community Center. VOTE: The Committee voted to give 5-6 small green recycling bins to the Community Center to help further promote recycling there.
  8. Tonnage report:

      In November –

Refuse: 16 trips to Millbury – 2 more than last month and tonnage is up.

Paper: 9 trips – 1 more than last month and tonnage is up slightly.

Commingled: 4 trips – 1 less than last month and tonnage is down.

Overall recycling rate is lower this month.
